Queering materiality and language, Pablo Vindel reimagines presence, absence, and belonging—crafting spaces of and for transformation.
Featured in the group exhibition SINOPSI at Centre d’Art La Capella during the 2018 Art Nou festival in Barcelona, Secret(s) comprises two large-scale glass sculptures that extend Pablo Vindel’s exploration of impermanence and transformation, previously seen in his solo exhibition 28 lapsus linguae at LAB36 de la galeria SENDA.
Crafted through a meticulous hand-blowing process, each sculpture is treated with silver nitrate on its interior surface—a technique reminiscent of 19th-century mirror-making. This transformative process turns the glass into convex, coiled forms that reflect and distort, generating a dynamic back-and-forth between materiality and illusion. The sculptures function as mirrors, mimicking and multiplying their surroundings while existing in a suspended tension between presence and absence.
As their silvered surfaces gradually tarnish, they echo the natural process of decay, eventually (and potentially) returning to transparency. This cyclical transformation becomes a meditation on impermanence, concealment, and revelation. Much like the secrets they embody, the sculptures conceal and, over time, reveal themselves—inviting the viewer to reflect on how time alters our perceptions of what we cherish and hold dear.
The group exhibition SINOPSI brings together works from sixteen galleries participating in Art Nou, an annual festival dedicated to emerging art in Barcelona. The title itself (”Synopsis”) suggests a moment of anticipation, like a prelude to a larger narrative, underscoring the fugitive nature of meaning, art, and existence. In this way, the exhibition serves as both an introduction and a contemplation on the impermanence of the works themselves and the world around us.
